Termites

Isoptera

Soil treatments, bait systems, and wood treatments to stop termite damage before it costs you thousands.

Overview

Termites are silent destroyers — subterranean and drywood termites cause billions of dollars in structural damage every year in the United States. Pennsylvania is home to Eastern subterranean termites, which build underground colonies and construct mud tubes to reach wood above ground. Damage often goes undetected until significant structural harm has occurred.

Identification

Workers: small (3–4 mm), soft-bodied, creamy white, no eyes

Swarmers: dark brown/black with two pairs of equal-length wings

Soldiers: large mandibles, orange-brown head

Behavior & Habitat

Subterranean termites live in underground colonies of up to 1 million individuals. They need moisture and build mud tubes to travel between soil and wood. They feed on cellulose in wood 24/7 and can consume a foot of 2×4 lumber in about 6 months. Swarms typically occur in spring.

Warning Signs

  • Mud tubes on foundation walls and piers
  • Hollow-sounding or soft wood when tapped
  • Discarded wings near windows after a swarm
  • Buckling or bubbling paint on wood surfaces
  • Darkening or blistering of wood structures

Prevention Tips

  • Eliminate wood-to-soil contact around the foundation
  • Fix plumbing leaks and ensure proper drainage
  • Keep gutters clean and direct downspouts away from foundation
  • Store firewood and lumber away from the house
  • Schedule annual professional termite inspections

Professional Treatment

Professional termite treatment includes thorough inspection with moisture meters, liquid soil treatments creating a chemical barrier, bait monitoring systems, and treating all wood-to-soil contact points. Annual monitoring ensures continued protection against re-infestation.
