Bed bug help, wherever you are

This guide explains how to identify bed bugs, reduce spread, and prepare for safe treatment. It is educational and does not replace local medical or pest-management advice.

What to inspect: Check mattress seams, bed frames, nearby furniture, and luggage for live insects, dark spotting, shed skins, or small blood marks.

  • โœ“Avoid moving belongings into other rooms.
  • โœ“Bag washable textiles before transport.
  • โœ“Use high heat when laundering and drying items.

Overview

Bed bugs are small, parasitic insects that feed exclusively on blood, primarily human blood. They have made a dramatic resurgence worldwide, partly due to increased global travel and pesticide resistance. They are expert hitchhikers, spreading via luggage, used furniture, and clothing.

Identification

Flat, oval, reddish-brown body about 4 to 5 mm long (apple seed size)

Wingless; cannot fly or jump

After feeding, body swells and turns dark reddish

Nymphs are translucent to yellowish-white and very small

Eggs are tiny (1 mm), white, and often found in clusters

Behavior & Habitat

Bed bugs are nocturnal and feed while the host sleeps, attracted by body heat and carbon dioxide. A feeding takes 5 to 10 minutes, after which they retreat to hiding spots. They prefer to hide within 8 feet of sleeping areas (in mattress seams, box springs, headboards, bed frames, and nightstands).

Warning Signs

  • โ€ขItchy, red welts in a line or cluster on exposed skin
  • โ€ขSmall dark spots (fecal stains) on mattress seams and sheets
  • โ€ขTiny blood smears on pillowcases or bed linen
  • โ€ขCast skins (shed exoskeletons) near hiding spots
  • โ€ขA sweet, musty odor in heavily infested rooms

Prevention Tips

  • Inspect hotel rooms before unpacking by checking mattress seams
  • Use protective encasements on mattresses and box springs
  • Avoid placing luggage on beds or upholstered furniture when traveling
  • Inspect and vacuum used furniture thoroughly before bringing it home
  • Reduce clutter around sleeping areas to minimize hiding spots

Treatment Approaches

Effective bed bug management requires a systematic approach. Heat treatment (raising room temperature to 120-140ยฐF) kills all life stages including eggs. Chemical treatments using residual products target cracks and crevices. Professional preparation procedures ensure long-term eradication.
