Centipedes

Chilopoda

Moisture control and residual sprays to keep centipedes out of basements and living areas.

Overview

Centipedes are fast-moving, multi-legged arthropods that hunt other pests in damp basements and bathrooms. House centipedes are the most common indoor species in Pennsylvania. While they are actually beneficial predators that eat other insects, their alarming appearance makes them unwelcome houseguests.

Identification

Elongated, flattened body with 15–177 pairs of legs depending on species

House centipede: 1–1.5 inches, yellowish-gray with dark stripes

Very long, banded legs giving a hairy appearance

One pair of legs per body segment

Move extremely fast — up to 1.3 feet per second

Behavior & Habitat

Centipedes are nocturnal predators that feed on spiders, insects, and other small arthropods. They require high moisture environments to survive. House centipedes are often found in basements, bathrooms, crawl spaces, and laundry rooms. Their presence often indicates an underlying moisture or insect problem.

Warning Signs

  • Seeing centipedes in bathrooms, basements, or drains
  • Finding them in bathtubs or sinks (they fall in and can't climb out)
  • Increased sightings during rainy or humid weather
  • Presence of other insects they prey on
  • Moisture problems in basement or crawl space

Prevention Tips

  • Fix moisture issues — repair leaks, improve drainage
  • Use dehumidifiers in basements and crawl spaces
  • Seal cracks and gaps in foundation and around pipes
  • Remove leaf litter and debris from around foundation
  • Address underlying insect problems that attract centipedes

Professional Treatment

Centipede control focuses on identifying and resolving moisture issues, applying residual treatments to baseboards and entry points, treating crawl spaces and basements, and recommending moisture barriers. Addressing the root cause is essential for long-term control.
